WC82: Brazil 4 Scotland 1I just love this image, plain and simple.

The picture shows Brazilian legend Socrates trying to outfox Scotland’s Gordon Strachan and Graeme Souness during the 1982 World Cup. Scotland had the audacity to actually take the lead against Brazil in this match courtesy of David Narey’s now infamous ‘toe poke’ goal. That led to a Brazilian masterclass and Scotland were ripped apart 4-1 by one of the greatest sides in international football.

Having spoken to someone recently who could remember the Brazilian sides of the 70s and 80s the difference in the Brazil team then and the one that competed in this year’s World Cup is huge. Despite Brazil reaching the semi-final this year the team were weak, disjointed and carried the weight of too much expectation. Brazil continually produce good individual talent but I don’t think that we will see a good Brazilian side anytime soon.
