Football in the Faroe Islands.
Despite a population of around 44,000 football flourishes in the Faroe Islands. Participation is very high and it is the most popular sport in the country. There is a 4 league top-tier system in the Faroes as well as 2 leagues for women and a league for ‘veterans’. Youth leagues through from U10s up to U19s operate for both boys and girls.
Most pitches in the Faroe Islands are artificial as the weather and terrain do not really allow for good football pitches. The picture above shows the artificial pitch of 07 Vestur. The team play in the fishing village of Sørvágur and were unfortunately relegated from the ‘Effodeildin’ (the Faroe Islands Premier League) last season.
