There is no doubting Borussia Dortmund’s place at football’s top table when it comes to iconic clubs. The German side have one of the greatest footballing arenas on the planet and they fill it every other week with some of the world’s best fans.
Unfortunately, despite this the club have recently been involved in several nasty incidents with fans and politics. The city of Dortmund has been experiencing a surge in neo-Nazi activity and there have been reports of far-right fans harassing staff at the club. BVB have even had to go as far as imposing bans on people who have give Nazi salutes and shout “Sieg Heil” inside the Westfalenstadion.
With this recent increase in distasteful behaviour the club have, in the last few days, decided to start a unique initiate involving one of Germany’s favourite pastimes, drinking.
The BVB fan’s department has printed and issued over one million beermats to be distributed to bars and beer halls around the city of Dortmund, in the hope that people get the message, “No Beer For Racists”. It is hoped that this increase in awareness and the fact that the club have been so willing to start this will allow fans and the (incredibly stupid) racists and extremists to get the message and focus back on the football.
“Borussia, beer — and Nazis? It does not fit!”
“Borussia Dortmund, the fan department and all BVB fans bear responsibility to take a clear stand against xenophobic and inhumane slogans rather than not listening to them,” said BVB president Reinhard Rauball.
“For tolerance and a colourful BVB; against racism and xenophobia.”
With Borussia Dortmund having a challenging season on the park it is the right time to get the fans united once more and for the club to try and stamp out all forms of discriminatory behaviour.
