Inspired by a thread on Pie and Bovril I compiled a brief Twitter list of players that have costed Dundee United over £100,000 in our history. Things quickly escalated as quite a few people got in touch to add players who had missed the initial cut.
So, with that in mind I thought I would take the time to produce a post that provides a (hopefully) definitive list of all the players we have signed that have cost us £100,000 or more. The figures listed here are the general fees that seem to be mentioned online so there may be some variety but I will go with what is most commonly reported. I have also not gone into detail about add-inns or clauses based on appearances but just on the reported fee at the time.
As you can see below I haven’t commented on each player because that would have taken me about three weeks, so I will leave you to be the judge on who provided ‘value’ for money…

I wasn’t going to include Conway as there seems to be differing reports about how much we actually paid for him via a tribunal. A few suggested it was over £100,000 but I always thought it was less than that. I really just wanted an excuse to show this…
Right, that’s it. If anyone looking through this list spots any glaring omissions then please do me a favour and keep it to yourself! I hope that i have found pretty much everyone (and thanks to the help on Twitter) but there may have been or two who slipped the net or those who’s fees were never made fully public and did cost us more than £100,000.
Who will be the next player United pay that amount for? It certainly seems like it wouldn’t happen anytime soon but maybe the Ogrens fancy going for it. If they are, I’ll just leave this here…
